Sometimes, The System Really Works
On April 11, 2015, I learned that the police had arrested a woman I worked with, Cathy Torres, and her husband, Mauricio Torres. The charges were the felony battery and capital murder of their 6yr old son, Isaiah.
None of us could believe it. Surely, it had to be a third party – it happened on their watch, but no! They could not have killed their son!
Then, details started coming out. Both had been married before and not counting the three children they had together, she had four children from her previous relationships and he had three.
Approximately ten years ago, they lost parental rights to all seven of those children due to physical and sexual abuse. Members of Cathy’s extended family adopted her children; Mauricio’s children remained with their mother.
Mauricio and Cathy just disappeared; left in the middle of the night without a word to anyone. They moved to the opposite side of the state and proceeded to have three more kids.
DFS received multiple calls from the school and neighbors, there were investigations but no one did anything. Because of that, a little boy died.
Mauricio’s trial began last Thursday, 11/10/16. All seven of the children came to court and testified to the abuse they had received from Mauricio and Cathy. In addition, their oldest natural child, their 9yr old daughter, testified about what happened to Isaiah, how he died.
Yesterday, the jury deliberated for a little less than an hour and returned a guilty verdict on both charges. Today, at 2:00 pm, they deliberated a little more than three hours and returned a death sentence recommendation. The judge will set a date next week.
Cathy’s trial is set for May 5, 2017. It is a shame that Mauricio’s jury will not be able to sit for that one as well…
